Creation of Modern and Safe learning spaces in rural school shelters in Chernihiv region in Ukraine

As of 29 May 2023, it is estimated that a total of 1,888 education institutions in Ukraine have suffered bombing and shelling. 180 have been destroyed completely. This affects over 7.5 million children and 1.5 million youth who were learning in Ukraine prior to the war.

To enable children to continue learning, online education is an option to provide a new sense of stability in a young person’s life.

Crown Agents along with its partner, SavED, are delivering the project ‘Creation of Modern and Safe learning spaces in rural school shelters in Chernihiv region in Ukraine’. The programme provides state-of-the-art technology and advanced teaching methods while providing safe shelters to children.

This project is aimed at small communities in the Chernihiv region, a region that has suffered significant destruction of educational infrastructure during the occupation. Around 13% of the total number of all educational institutions in the region were damaged to varying degrees.

Rehabilitating safe and functional bomb shelters in four rural schools in the Chernihiv region is allowing the educational process restoration and is guaranteeing safety during air raids and artillery shelling for local children and adults. The team have transformed these bomb shelters into educational spaces – digital learning centres (DLC) to provide children with access to quality education, safe spaces, and psychosocial support.
